Description

Clematis proteus is a really special variety that produces double flowers first in early summer on older stems, then later in the year at the end of summer it produces single flowers. Named after the greek god proteus who was always able to slither out of being captured by changing his shape. The flowers on this clematis are a stunning dusky mauve pink; each layer of petals is a lighter shade than the last. Sometimes showcasing fully double, semi-double and single flowers all at the same time, this really is an exhibitionist. Clematis proteus is a deciduous climber that grows to about 2.5m tall, thriving in any moist well-drained soil, planting in full sun to partial shade, clematis prefer their roots to be kept cooler in the shade. Clematis proteus is classed as a group 2 clematis for pruning purposes. Prune in late winter or early spring aiming to retain a framework and stimulate new shoots, this will maximise flowering throughout the season. Supplied in 8cm pots
