Elephant garlic for spring planting that produces large, easy-to-grow bulbs with a milder, sweeter flavour than traditional garlic. Plant in spring in full sun with well-drained soil, spacing bulbs 20cm (8in) apart; plants can reach up to 1 metre (3.5ft) tall. Remove the purple flower heads as they emerge to encourage the best eating bulbs. Hardy and high-yielding (four times the quantity at harvest), ideal for roasting whole or grating into salads, and suitable for garden beds, containers or greenhouses.
